The question we get asked more than any other is simple. Will my usual size fit, or will it drown me? Fair question. Essentials hoodies are not cut like the slim hoodies you find in most high street stores, and guessing your size from a product photo is a quick way to end up exchanging parcels. So here is the honest version of how the fit works, based on the hoodies we handle and pack every day.
Start with this: they are meant to fit big
An essentials hoodie is designed with a relaxed, oversized shape. The shoulders drop lower than a standard hoodie, the body has room through the chest and stomach, and the sleeves run a touch long so the cuff sits where it should when your arms are down. That is the look. It is also why people find them so comfortable for long days, travel and layering.
This means the size on the label behaves a little differently to what you might expect. If you wear a medium in most Australian brands, a medium Essentials Hoodie will feel roomier than you are used to. Not sloppy, just relaxed. The fabric plays a part too. The fleece is heavy and holds its structure, so the hoodie keeps its shape on your body instead of clinging.
Your usual size, or one size down?
Here is the rule we give friends and family. Take your usual size if you want the intended look, the one you see on the models. The hood sits right, the body drapes, and there is space to wear a tee or a light layer underneath without the whole thing feeling tight.
Go one size down if you prefer a cleaner, more regular fit. A lot of our customers who wear hoodies to work or out to dinner do exactly this. You still get the dropped shoulder and the weight of the fabric, just with less extra room. What we would not suggest is going two sizes down. At that point you lose the shape that makes the hoodie what it is, and the sleeves can start to feel short.
If you are tall, stick with your usual size even if you like a closer fit. The extra length in the body and sleeves is worth more than a slightly trimmer chest.
Between sizes? Read this before you order
Plenty of people sit between a medium and a large and freeze at the size selector. Think about how you actually wear a hoodie. If it goes over shirts and jumpers through winter, choose the bigger size. If it mostly goes over a tee, and you like things neat, choose the smaller one.
It also helps to check a hoodie you already own and love. Lay it flat and compare the feel rather than chasing exact numbers. Oversized fits are forgiving by design, which is the good news. A centimetre here or there matters far less than it does in a tailored shirt.
What about kids sizes?
Kids essentials hoodies are sized by age, from 4 through to 14. Our advice is to buy for the age the child is now, not the age they are heading towards, unless they are right at the top of a size and you want growing room for winter. Kids grow out of sleeves before anything else, so if your child is tall for their age, one size up is the safer call.
Still unsure? That is what returns are for
We would rather you order with confidence than sit on the fence. Every order ships free anywhere in Australia, and if the size is not right when it arrives, the returns page explains how to swap it without any drama. Try it on at home, over the clothes you will actually wear with it, and decide with the hood up and down.
Pick the fit that matches how you live in a hoodie, and you will reach for it most days. That is kind of the whole point.
